About
About Kevin Hagen
Juris Doctor. Entrepreneur. Author. A multidisciplinary professional who writes about where legal concepts and business realities meet.
Kevin Hagen writes about the intersection of law and business because that is where he has spent his career — not on one side of it.
Legal training teaches you to read a document carefully, ask who bears which risk, and notice what a commitment actually says rather than what everyone assumes it says. Operating a business teaches you something different: that decisions are made under time pressure, with imperfect information, and that a technically perfect answer delivered too late is not useful.
Kevin holds a Juris Doctor from Nova Southeastern University, a Bachelor of Science in Advertising from the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications earned with honors, and a Justice certification from Harvard University. His professional experience spans business ownership, compliance, contracts, governance, finance-related industries, marketing, media, professional sports, and operations.
That range is the point. The same decision looks different through a legal lens than through a financial, marketing, or operational one, and most business problems arrive wearing more than one of those costumes at the same time. Writing about them from a single perspective usually produces an answer that is accurate and unhelpful.
He also writes under the pen name Kevin Lawrence, and his books extend the same interest in making complicated subjects understandable to people who did not go to school for them.

Background
A Multidisciplinary Perspective
Six areas of experience inform how these subjects get explained here. None of them stands alone in practice.
Law & Compliance
A Juris Doctor and years of work inside regulated environments — policy, documentation, internal controls, governance, and regulatory interpretation translated into business language.
Entrepreneurship & Ownership
Building and operating businesses, which is a different education than studying them: payroll, vendors, contracts, cash flow, and decisions made with incomplete information.
Marketing & Media
A degree in Advertising from the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications, plus campaign, brand, and media work where claims and disclosures matter.
Professional Sports
Former NBPA Certified Player Agent and former FIBA Licensed Player Agent — historical certifications that shaped a practical view of sponsorship, endorsement, and athlete-brand business.
Operations
Process design, vendor management, and the unglamorous discipline of making an organization do consistently what it says it does.
Finance-Related Industries
Exposure to environments where disclosure, recordkeeping, and oversight expectations are heavier than in general commerce.
Why He Writes
Understanding Before Advice
Most people encounter legal concepts at the worst possible moment — after signing, after a notice arrives, after a partnership has already gone sideways. By then the useful questions are behind them.
The purpose of this website is to move that understanding earlier. Not so readers can represent themselves or skip professional help, but so they recognize what kind of issue they are looking at, understand the vocabulary well enough to have a real conversation about it, and know when to bring in someone qualified.
Every article here is written the same way: the direct answer first, because that is what a reader actually came for; then the context, because a direct answer without context is easy to misapply; then the questions the concept usually raises next.
Kevin understands both the legal concepts and the business realities behind them.

What This Website Is Not
Kevin Hagen does not provide legal services or legal representation through this website. Nothing published here is legal advice, and reading it or contacting him does not create an attorney-client relationship. The material is educational commentary about how concepts generally work; laws vary by jurisdiction and change over time.
